Religious Faith(s) and the Defence of Life

On the occasion of the World Social Forum 2009 (WSF), which took place in Belém do Pará from 27 January to 1 February, the Jesuit Region of Amazônia organized a meeting under the title Fe’namazonia Pre-forum.

To be held just before the WSF, this Forum was on the topic of religious faith(s) and the defence of life, with a focus on the specific contribution of religious faith to the social and political commitment of a person or a group.

The 200 participants – who were Jesuits, collaborators in Jesuit works, other religious, laymen and women from all over the world – were helped in their reflection by the inputs of three important speakers (Frei Betto, Fr José Comblin and Marina Silva).

To add to the reflection process there were presentations of grassroots experiences by Vicaria del Sur (Colombia); the Sisters of Notre Dame from Anapú, Pará (Brazil); the Equipe Itinerante Interinstitucional da Amazônia; the Conselho Indigena de Roraima (Brazil); and the South Asian Peoples’ Initiatives – SAPI (India). The results of the Pre-forum was presented at a workshop during the WSF.

I am happy to see that so much good materials are available for one to reflect on the happening in the world, especially to the Eco system. I am sure that when the Jesuits and the collaborators come together for the first three days, we will able to reflect on what we are called to do as Catholics and much more as Jesuits. The GC has clearly indicated that preserving the eco system is part of our commitment and it is one of the spiritual activities as our Father St. Ignatius has indicated in the contemplation to obtain love. I look forward to a meaningful sharing during the meeting and I am sure we will able to come to some collective action plans for all of us as Jesuits.

It is very consoling to know that the people who are struggling for Justice, are not alone. Their voices, concerns and struggles are shared. This assured sharing only goes to say thatGod is at work. He hears the cry of the struggling. He stands for them. One day these struggling masses will enjoy life and dignity.

Congratulations on the wonderful World Social Forum coming up. I will keep it in my prayers. It’s starting on the feast of our foundress, Angela Merici, so she should have some special influence. It’s so great to read of such gatherings, especially this one of indigenous peoples. May we hear their cries to save planet earth.

[in response to Headlines newsletter special reports from WSF]
Thank you for keeping me on your mailing list. The materials I am receiving are very helpful both personally and functionally (in my work). I was the national secretariat head of the Philippine Province Social Apostolate when I began receiving your mails. That was in 1997. I have moved to the education apostolate in Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City, Philippines, since May 2003, doing focused work on the labor crisis of the school then. (We are enjoying industrial peace for 5 years now). For close to 6 years now, I serve as Personnel Director of the University trying to do something on the pastoral needs of the employees (unionized and non-unionized) on top of the usual Personnel functions. What I have been getting from SJS Headlines are still very relevent to what I am now and to what I am doing.
Thank you once again. Continue the good work and more power!
Sincerely,
Esmeraldo B. Lampauog

Greetings for the Chinese New Year of Ox
I am grateful for news on the World Social Forum.
The two news items on Ecology and Creation and Our connection with Creation are very important to me. The challenge of our covenant with creation in CG35 is indeed challenging!
Best wishes,
Yours sincerely in Christ,

I am happy that you have been able to send the power point presentations so early to all those who are interested. The number of photos could have been a few more giving the spirit of the pre forum meeting that was so vibrant.
I am happy that I had a chance to attend the pre forum meeting in Belem. It was a good experience. I felt proud to be Jesuit, belonging to such a group of dedicated men to the social cause.
Congratulations to all the organizers of the forum. You have put in a lot of hard work.

I am keeping in touch through this internet. The World Social Forum is really doing the right thing at the right time. What I am sad is that In India I have not seen the report in the news media. But this internet is doing marvelous work. I am waiting to see more news. The subject on environment issues is well presented. I have been organizing our Adivasi Warli art on the subject on environment and it is interesting to see that the whole world is anxiously waiting to see changes. Keep up the right spirit to move this concern on the global level.

You have been able to get all the important materials in one place. The summaries have been well done and the presentations are inspiring. The experience of the Pre-forum has been a good experience for all of us. These materials helped to not only to relive those moments but also to reflect on the happenings at leisure. Thank you for all the hard work the team has done to make these materials available to all of us.
